The first day of school has come and gone where I live, but I have a thing for office supplies all year long and couldn’t resist sharing some pencil crafts you can make for the first day of school or any other time to encourage writing or just for fun.

Pencil Crafts

pencil crafts for back to school and beyond These printable back to school table settings from A Girl and a Glue Gun are super cute and would be great for breakfast on the first day of school, for class picture day or any other time. It’s a free printable you’re sure to come up with lots of uses for.

If you’re a knitter, don’t miss the knit pencil scarf by Alice Humbracht. It’s perfect for a teacher (or knit it shorter/narrower for a child; several sizes are included) and is sure to become everyone’s favorite first day accessory. The pattern is $3.99 on Ravelry.

The book Huge and Huggable Mochimochi has a great big knit pencil in it that I’ve always wanted to make, too.

Which of course reminds me again of the amazing pencil pillow from Fish Museum and Circus. Because there’s nothing cuter than gigantic office supplies.

Pencil Bags and Boxes

I love getting to have a zipper without having to use the sewing machine, too. This is a clever way to do it, and you can decorate your bag any way you like or use patterned felt.

You can upcycle cereal boxes to make these cute pencil boxes from Joy with Purpose, or make an awesome sewn easel pencil pouch (great for colored pencils!) with the tutorial from Orange Bettie.

Pencil Toppers

pencil crafts for back to school and beyond While you’re making pencil crafts you should probably make some crafts for your pencils, too, right?

Wrapping pencils in washi tape, whether just one strip or the whole pencil, is an easy way to personalize your pencils, but making pencil toppers is a lot of fun, too.

Make sure you check with your school to see if these are OK in your kids’ classroom, or just use them at home for homework time.

Red Ted Art has such a great collection of pencil topper ideas I don’t feel like I need to share more, but I will highlight a couple of my favorites: Rainbow Loom Pencil Toppers from Make and Takes (because the girl just discovered rubber band looms over summer break) and these adorable felt animal toppers from Lia Griffith. The cat is my favorite! pencil crafts for back to school and beyond

How are you celebrating back to school? I hope you’re working some crafting into this busy time, and I’d love to hear all about it.
